Energy-related behaviour and rebound when rationality, self-interest and willpower are limited

چکیده

The extent to which adopting energy-efficient technologies results in energy savings depends on how such are used, and monetary from efficiency spent. Energy rebound occurs when potential diminished due post-adoption behaviour. Here we review empirical studies six behavioural regularities affect three energy-relevant decisions ultimately rebound: adoption of energy-saving products or practices, their intensity use spending associated savings. findings suggest that behaviours reflect limited rationality willpower may increase rebound, while the effects driven by bounded self-interest less clear. We then describe interventions with each can influence thus serve achieve higher Future research ought study a more integrated manner, particular focus re-spending as this presents greatest challenge for policy. impact be resulting This Review examines

Self-control relies on glucose as a limited energy source: willpower is more than a metaphor.

The present work suggests that self-control relies on glucose as a limited energy source. Laboratory tests of self-control (i.e., the Stroop task, thought suppression, emotion regulation, attention control) and of social behaviors (i.e., helping behavior, coping with thoughts of death, stifling prejudice during an interracial interaction) showed that (a) acts of self-control reduced blood gluco...

Rationality, Self-interest, and Welfare in Contemporary Economics 2 Self-interest

Is homo economicus self-interested? That question might seem as silly as asking whether the Pope is Catholic. Most people, including most economists, would be inclined to say, " Of course. " Indeed the first sentence in the Wikipedia entry for " homo economicus " states that it " is the concept in many economic theories of humans as rational and narrowly self-interested actors. " Economists typ...

Rationality and Self-Interest in Peer to Peer Networks

Much of the existing work in peer to peer networking assumes that users will follow prescribed protocols without deviation. This assumption ignores the user’s ability to modify the behavior of an algorithm for self-interested reasons. We advocate a different model in which peer to peer users are expected to be rational and selfinterested. This model is found in the emergent fields of Algorithmi...

Happiness When Temptation Overwhelms Willpower

The economics of happiness is applied to further the understanding of important consumption decisions in which limited willpower is often argued to lead to suboptimal choices. Based on individuals’ judgments of the quality of their lives, it is, in principle, possible to derive whether some observed behavior is suboptimal and is therefore reducing a person’s welfare. We discuss the key characte...

Tradeoffs between Self-interest and Other-Regarding Preferences Cause Willpower Depletion

In this paper we show that making choices that involve conflicts between self-interest and other-regarding concerns may deplete cognitive resources and willpower and thus reduce individuals' ability to exert self-control. In a lab experiment we use a series of modified dictator games to manipulate whether subjects are exposed to tradeoffs between their self-interest and the interest of others: ...
